Bridgewater Church of the Brethren partners with other local congregations to provide accessible to food to children on the weekends and breaks during the regular Rockingham County school year.  The program includes the Elementary and Middle Schools in the Turner Ashby High School district.  Our congregation has provided bags of food for children at John Wayland Elementary and Mountain View Elementary.

Volunteers shop for the food, and others pack the bags weekly (on their own schedule) in collaboration with a local girl scout troop.  On Thursdays the bags are delivered (again by volunteers) to the schools for distribution.  The school’s guidance office provides the family make up to the church and makes the connections and works with families for their participation in the program. The program is anonymous and it costs the parents nothing. From 2014 2017 our congregation supplied bags for 9 families each week. in 2018, we filled over 90 backpacks each week in the month of October, for Mountain View Elementary.
