Happy 100th Birthday, Naomi West!
On the occasion of receving birthday greetings from our congregation on Sunday, September 2, 2007, before her 100th birthday on September 6, Naomi West shared these words:
" I don't remember the first time that I was taken to church, because I was taken. My mother walked a tenth of a mile down the lane and across the main road to the old church. And Sunday after Sunday, hot, cold, windy, rain, whatever, we went to church. I just didn't miss! I sorta like that practice. It's pretty good for you; at least it was pretty good for me. Maybe it would be helpful to others, too. I thank God for my church and for the people who are so faithful and good, and try to come to church, Sunday after Sunday. Lord God, help us to praise you, and do the things you want us to do, and be the kind of person you want us to be. May your name be praised dear Lord. Amen."
In honor of Naomi West's 100th brithday, we invite you to use the link at the top of this page to visit the early days of the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren through the memories of Naomi. Naomi shared these writings about the first location of the Bridgewater Church, the dress of church members and plain Brethren in the days of her childhood.
Namoi shared these writings with our church through Sunday School, Bible School groups, and church memberships classes. They are now accessible through the web page of our church, and are accompanied by photos taken of Naomi West and Emmert Bittinger in the plain clothes fashion of dress, in the summer of 2002.
